If you're turning 65, when are you eligible to enroll?

When you first become eligible to receive Medicare benefits, this period is referred to as your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). Your IEP is a crucial timeframe that begins three months before the month in which you turn 65 and continues for an additional three months after that birthday month. To illustrate this, let's say you celebrate your 65th birthday on May 18. In that case, your IEP would commence on February 1 and extend all the way until August 31. This six-month window is an important opportunity to enroll in Medicare and ensure you have the health coverage you need as you reach this milestone age.

Before Birthday Month

Enrolling early in Medicare offers several benefits. If you submit your application during the three months leading up to your birthday month, your coverage will start on the very first day of that month. For instance, if you decide to apply in March, your coverage will take effect on May 1st making it a wonderful early birthday gift!

During Birthday Month

If you choose to apply for Medicare during your birthday month, it's important to note that your coverage will not begin immediately. Instead, it will take effect the following month. For example, if you submit your application in May, your coverage would officially start on June 1st. This means there will be a brief gap between your application and the initiation of your benefits.

After Birthday Month

If you apply for Medicare in the three months after your birthday month, your coverage will begin the first of the month following your application. In this example, if you apply in June, July or August, your coverage start date will be the first day of the following month after your application is received. It is important to note that you may pay a penalty or have a gap in coverage if you don’t enroll when you’re first eligible.
